About Venerable Tenzin Lekdron

Venerable Tenzin Lekdron embodies a profound connection to Buddhism, blending her Sri Lankan heritage with the wisdom of Tibetan Buddhist traditions. Born in Sri Lanka, her journey is reminiscent of a modern-day spiritual explorer, akin to Indiana Jones, as she navigated through diverse cultures and experiences.

At the age of twenty-one, Venerable Lekdron embarked on a transformative voyage, stowing away on a yacht that traversed the Indian Ocean, leading her through numerous countries before settling in Australia with her two children. This early adventure laid the foundation for her deep-rooted understanding of the interconnectedness of cultures and the universal teachings of Buddhism.

Ordained by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Venerable Lekdron returned to her native Sri Lanka, where she spent six years immersing herself in the local culture and reconnecting with her people. During this time, she devoted herself to humanitarian efforts, working in a refuge for girls who had survived abuse. Her compassionate spirit drove her to provide not just emotional and physical support but also education, empowering these young women to break free from cycles of poverty and adversity.

Venerable Lekdron’s commitment to unity and harmony is evident in her involvement with interfaith groups in Sri Lanka, where she worked tirelessly to bridge divides and foster understanding among diverse communities. She co-founded the Tara Lanka Foundation, a charitable organization dedicated to education and skills development in rural areas like Anuradhapura and Kandy, furthering her mission of creating positive change in society.

In Australia, Venerable Lekdron continues her advocacy for harmony and healing through collaborations with institutions like the Great Stupa of Universal Compassion, focusing on projects that promote interfaith dialogue and mutual respect.

Her teacher, Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche, entrusted her with a profound mission—to bring healing and peace to Sri Lanka through the construction of a five-storey Medicine Buddha statue. This monumental project, known as the 5MB Project, symbolizes her dedication to uplifting communities and restoring spiritual balance in a world facing challenges.

Venerable Lekdron’s expertise spans across Pali, Sanskrit, and Sinhala Buddhist traditions, reflecting her deep knowledge and reverence for the diverse Buddhist lineages that have thrived in Sri Lanka for centuries. Her fluency in English and local languages allows her to connect with pilgrims and practitioners from all walks of life, offering them an authentic and transformative journey into the heart of Buddhism in Sri Lanka.
